2019! – The Battle to Rule Britain

‘THE BATTLE TO RULE BRITAIN’

This term, Y5H will be looking at the Anglo-Saxon and Viking era. Whilst researching and developing our knowledge on the numerous invasions, gory battles and heritage of both the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, we will be focusing on ‘BEOWULF’ a hero sent to defeat the ghastly Grendel.

We will be immersing ourselves in the text ‘Beowulf’, written by Michael Morpurgo.

Friday 16th November

This week, we have continued to look at Naledi and Tiro and how their actions and speech can influence our decisions about each character as readers. We have worked very hard on inferring information throughout the book along with summarising at key points of the story.

In Maths, we have continued to look at factors, multiples and prime numbers. WE can now list all prime numbers up to 100!!! We have started to look at column multiplication and focused heavily on multiplying three and four digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.

Friday 2nd November

This term in Y5H, we are travelling to South Africa!

We will be reading the novel Journey to Jo’Burg by Beverley Naidoo, creating a diary extract as one of the main characters Naledi as she travels to Johannesburg with her brother Tiro. We will be analysing the main characters – drawing on their appearance, actions and speech within the story.

In Maths, we are exploring multiples, factors and prime numbers and looking at common multiples and factors.

In P.E we are creating our own African dances along with developing our tactical knowledge at Tag-rugby. Our Design and Technology unit will see us design, create and evaluate our very own Africa masks!

Friday 12th October

This week, we have continued to measure and draw angles with protractors to the nearest degrees along with finding the perimeter and area of compound and irregular shapes.

We all enjoyed our trip to the Warner Bros. studios and had a fantastic day handling real props used on the sets of all of the Harry Potter films as well as fighting the dark Death Eaters on Hogwarts Bridge. We loved seeing the Hogwarts Express on Platform 9 3/4 and even managed to enjoy the Forbidden Forest.

We continued to look at reversible and irreversible changes in science and carried on improving our tactical knowledge in hockey.

Friday 5th October

This week, we have explored angles looking at the different types of angles, measuring angles correctly with a protractor and drawing angles to the nearest degree. In English, we have completed our diary as Harry Potter as he enters Diagon Alley. We have also re-drafted our work to ensure it includes highly effective vocabulary and emotive language to show Harry’s feelings and thoughts at different stages of the day. In science we have looked at dissolving materials in water and organising them into ‘soluble’ and ‘insoluble’. In P.E. we have continued to improve our hockey skills and tactical knowledge by playing 3 vs 3 matches. We have had a huge push on presentation and handwriting this week ensuring we are achieving our ‘Gold Standard’ consistently.

Friday 28th September

In English, we have been writing a diary about Harry Potter in Diagon Alley. In Maths we have been adding and subtracting large numbers up to 6 digit numbers. In science we have been looking at reversible and irreversible states and the various processes used to reverse a process such as evaporation or condensation. In computing, we have continued to use a website called Times Table Rockstars and battle it out with children all over the country. In P.E. we have been doing hockey and netball.

Friday 21st September

This week we’ve been focusing on the character of Harry (From Harry Potter) in English. In Maths, we have been looking at decimal and fractions equivalents as well as finding fractions of amounts. In P.E we have been progressing to a High Five Netball match. We have learnt how to complete accurate Bounce passes and Chest passes and advanced our tactical knowledge. We have also been dribbling and shooting in Quick sticks. We are still completing our 95 question times tables daily along with PSHE and RE. We have really enjoyed our week and thank you for reading our blog.

Friday 14th September 2018 – Y5H

This week we’ve been focusing on the character of Dudley (From Harry Potter) in English. In Maths, we have been looking at place value up to 1,000,000. In P.E we have been aiming at progressing at High Five Netball. So far we have learned how to do Bounce pass and Chest pass. We have also been doing Quick sticks. We have been completing our 95 question times tables daily along with PSHE and RE. We have really enjoyed our week and thank you for reading our blog.
